We had our weekly Gardening Club session today wit

We had our weekly Gardening Club session today with Deb @msdmeanar and Anna M @heritage_llama 🌱😊

A huge thank you to our neighbours who came along and helped us weed the beds around The Pippin. We managed to tackle most of the planters and got lots done!

🌿 Removed all the nettles and dock (we will be using them to make our own paper!)
🍓 Found some secret strawberries hiding
🍋 Took some lemon balm home
🌱 Harvested rhubarb and red hot chillies 🌶️
🌻 Planted sunflowers (some to take home and some for the beds)
🎃 Found a home for a pumpkin
🍉 Popped a watermelon plant in the window
🐝 Gave a bee a proper burial
🍅 Handed out tomato, cucumber and marrow plants to neighbours
🪴 Turned over the soil
🐛 Found and monitored some animals

Anna M has taken home some chilli and rhubarb harvested from the green space and will be making a jam for everyone to try at our next Gardening Club session.

Today Rebecca and Anna have been gathering texture

Today Rebecca and Anna have been gathering textures, colours, surfaces and patterns of the street for some colour fields we will use in a book we are writing. It’s so interesting to slow down and pay attention to the street and all its different layers. We observed mosses, lichens, paint peels, plants, furnace waste made into walls, brickwork and many other surfaces. More about our book soon.

Starting today! The Portland Restaurant Project with chef and artist Alex Norcop 🍴🥒🌽🥙🍅🌮🍴

This year long project is a collaboration between Alex and our youth club members, who will lead on the menu design, themes and mission for the restaurant each season. Workshops and research trips will take place across the year so that each seasonal meal is completely unique and responsive to the season and the young ppl who take the lead with Alex. There will be lots of skills learned across the project, from foraging to food prep, hosting space and more - always trying our best to work with local, seasonal produce. Alex joins us for this project with a whole host of knowledge and expertise as a chef and artist.

Today’s scoping session for young neighbours will make a start on working with youth club to gather ideas and dreams for the restaurant 🌱🙌💚

Alex says “Hey I’m Alex, full time chef and part time artist. Wholeheartedly passionate about food, nature, community and social change. Most happy when out in the wild foraging and learning, working with sustainable produce or at a punk gig standing at the back. So excited and honoured to be working with The Portland Inn Project.”
