Today Rebecca and Anna have been gathering textures, colours, surfaces and patterns of the street for some colour fields we will use in a book we are writing. It’s so interesting to slow down and pay attention to the street and all its different layers. We observed mosses, lichens, paint peels, plants, furnace waste made into walls, brickwork and many other surfaces. More about our book soon.

Starting today! The Portland Restaurant Project with chef and artist Alex Norcop 🍴🥒🌽🥙🍅🌮🍴

This year long project is a collaboration between Alex and our youth club members, who will lead on the menu design, themes and mission for the restaurant each season. Workshops and research trips will take place across the year so that each seasonal meal is completely unique and responsive to the season and the young ppl who take the lead with Alex. There will be lots of skills learned across the project, from foraging to food prep, hosting space and more - always trying our best to work with local, seasonal produce. Alex joins us for this project with a whole host of knowledge and expertise as a chef and artist.

Today’s scoping session for young neighbours will make a start on working with youth club to gather ideas and dreams for the restaurant 🌱🙌💚

Alex says “Hey I’m Alex, full time chef and part time artist. Wholeheartedly passionate about food, nature, community and social change. Most happy when out in the wild foraging and learning, working with sustainable produce or at a punk gig standing at the back. So excited and honoured to be working with The Portland Inn Project.”

Thank you @_wildrumpus for hosting our team and other interested folks for accredited Carbon Literacy training today. Beautifully held by Aileen in the Whirligig Woodland. We finished the day with some clear actions to reduce our organisational carbon balances, but importantly that this be alongside other measures to support biodiversity, embed nature care and sustainable approaches to how we organise across our projects and programme. Highly recommend this training for other organisations and individuals 💚🌞💚

About the Event:
What is the dream artist residency for Stoke?
Anna Francis and Rebecca Davies from The Portland Inn Project with Ben Miller from The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery will host a conversation for artists, creative practitioners and researchers to ask this question.
With both The Portland Inn Project and The Potteries Museum and Art gallery undertaking building development projects currently, including dedicated artist residency space within the plans, now is the perfect time to dream together about what makes a good artist residency. Anna and Rebecca will draw on over 20 years experience of programming and taking part in artist’s residencies, and share plans for the Artist residency rooms within the PIP building and Ben Miller will share the museum’s architectural plans, and potential within the Artist Residency Studio under development, before we open up to explore together what artists need and want from a residency programme in the city.
